Defeat the Beast

Duke Basketball Strength & Conditioning Coach

Coach William Stephens is our strength and conditioning coach and has been on the Duke staff since 1998. The NC native has been a certified strength and conditioning specialist (CSCS) since 1996, and has worked with four Duke Final Four teams and a pair of national championship squads. A three-time state powerlifting champion, Coach Will provides personalized workout plans for each of our players and helps our guys reach their strength and conditioning goals. Coach Will's office is located right in our weight room in the Krzyzewski Center and when he's not working out with our current players you can often find him providing expert advice to our staff and former players, sending encouraging text messages to our players about their next workout, pumping iron (he recently benched 400 lbs!), and planning for his next workouts.

Under the guidance of Coach Will, the mission of the Duke Basketball Strength and Conditioning Program is to apply our program's standards of commitment and hard work to the thorough development of functional strength, agility, footwork, flexibility, core strength and conditioning. In other words, we strive to defeat the beast every time we step foot in the weight room and on the court.

"These iPads are amazing. We love them. They make our preparation so much easier and it is great we can have our own music and apps on there too."

- Mason Plumlee

This season, Duke Basketball became the first college hoops program to provide players and staff with iPads. Now, our practices, games, highlights, scouting tapes, calendar, motivational videos and more are available 24/7 to our team.

Each iPad is protected by a customized case with each player's name and superhero-style cartoon. The iPads and all our team's video operations are handled by our team's full-time IT Director, Kevin Cullen.

Nike Gear

Both on and off the court,

Duke Basketball is always in style.

Duke Basketball is equipped with the latest and greatest basketball gear from Nike. Each year, our program is outfitted head to toe with the very best attire in sports.

  • The custom Duke Kobe's in the Blue Devil colorway are provided by Kobe each season only to the Blue Devils.
  • Duke was the first school to wear Nike's Aerographics technology with our custom imagery on the back.
  • Duke was one of eight schools to sport the Nike Hyper Elite Platinum uniforms in 2012.
  • Nike provided custom boots for team's trip to Ft. Bragg in 2012. Nike made Coach K a custom pair of boots in honor of his record-setting 903rd win in 2011.
  • In 2009, Nike produced a pair of custom Air Force 1's for our coaching staff complete with Duke logo.
  • In 2009, Nike allowed our players to design their own NikeID shoes to wear in the NCAA Tournament.

At Duke, the goal is to be No. 1 every day in important areas we can control; effort, pride, attitude, teamwork and commitment.

The result of a No. 1-mentality has been top finishes nationally, in the ACC and in the polls.

First Class Resources

When our players take the court with that Duke jersey, they are prepared at the highest level in every way. Consider:

Duke is the only program to utilize both a full-time athletic trainer (Jose Fonseca) and a director of rehab (Nick Potter). Nick and Jose are with the team at every practice, game and team function.

"Jose and Nick are the best at what they do. They got my toe right. I trust them. The care I got at Duke is as good as it gets at any level anywhere in the world."

    -Kyrie Irving

As mentioned above, our players have access to our team's full-time strength/conditioning coach Will Stephens and one of the nicest weight rooms and gyms anywhere.

"Coach Will helped me completely transform my body. I was more prepared than anyone at the NBA pre-draft tests."

    -Miles Plumlee

Our players enjoy breakfast daily during the season as well as a fully-stocked brand new Nutrition Room adjacent to our locker room. Additionally, we have meals catered daily by team caterer, Sam. Our players meet with nutritionist Franca Alphin as well.

To ensure our players minimize time missed on campus and in class, our team takes chartered flights to all destinations outside the state of NC.

"Road trips were the best at Duke. We traveled like an NBA team, had fans everywhere and always played in front of crazy crowds."

    -Kyle Singler

Our team has complete access to one of the nation's top 10 medical facilities and NC's No.1-ranked hospital in the Duke Medical Center. At home and on the road, our team includes a physician (Dr. Jeff Bytomski) and a team orthopaedic surgeon (Dr. Claude T. Moorman).

"People don't realize how deep our support goes at Duke. You never want to get sick or seriously injured but when it happens there's no better place to be than at Duke."

    -Mason Plumlee

Our staff was selected to revitalize USA Basketball. Together, they've been at Duke for over 70 years as players and coaches.
